Sunday Scribblings #6: my shoes

Inspired by one of Laini's posts, this week's Sunday Scribblings prompt is: "My Shoes." You could write about your favorite pair of shoes, or the shoes that have taken you to exciting places. You could write about the pair of shoes that you never get to wear, the shoes you only wore once, or the bronzed baby shoes that sit on your dresser. Whichever shoes you choose to write about, I can't wait to read your Scribblings!

As always, when you have written, please leave a comment with the perma-link to this post (not just to your blog. To give us your perma-link, select the specific post from your sidebar. When it has come up on the page you will be able to just copy the post's url from the navigation window at the top of the page (where the web address is) and then paste that into your comment. See how deirdre and carolb have done it in the comments. Thank you!)

Oh what a great idea for a post!

Well, I remember a pair of patent leather "mary janes" that my mother bought for me many years ago. And if you're too young to know what "Mary Janes" are, they are shiny black patent leather shoes, with a strap across the top of the that snaps closed. Just think of "tap" shoes and you'll know what I mean. And they made such a wonderful sound when I walked. I just loved those shoes. Thanks for the remembrance.

When my sixteen year old daughter returned from Uganda with a fire in her belly, Kiley decided she was going to transform the world all by herself. Her newfound inspiration came from working at a Ugandan day school where hundreds of underprivileged children spun their way into her heart. They may be impoverished by American standards, but their bright smiles and their warm hugs defied our stereotypical understanding of what truly satisfies the human spirit. Many of these children walked barefooted to school, several miles, in the dusty streets and after a rain, in the muddy trails leading up to the God Cares School. They were treated to one rice and beans meal per day, which was far more than their own family could provide. It is very common for these children to pick up illnesses and diseases through their feet, where open scratches and wounds are the entry point for germs. Kiley was determined to put shoes on the feet of these children. Shoes at the God Cares School are a luxury the children cannot afford. So when Kiley came back to Southern California, she immediately began to share her zeal about the children to anyone who would listen. Along with her girlfriend, Hillary, they began to plan their campaign to collect donated shoes. Hillary's father is a pastor of a large church, and when he heard of their intentions, he decided to help them out. One Sunday, after delivering a compelling message about service to others, he concluded the message by informing his congregation they would be participating in an unforgettable event. He said, "This is the Sunday we will all remember, forever, leaving the church without our shoes." That's right. High school kids stood at the back doors, and as congregants left the worship center, they were invited to drop their shoes into zip-lock baggies. Pastor Brad explained that no one should feel awkward, or forced, to participate. Spiked heels or Gucci leather may not help a Ugandan. Even still, men and women responded in droves ... dropping off their shoes, and walking to the parking lot in their stocking feet. Over 5,000 pairs of shoes were collected that Sunday morning, and today they are all in the country of Uganda being distributed to those who need them to stay healthy. Yes, it was a Sunday morning we will never forget.
